Dr. Matthew Smuck, MD, is the Chief of PM&R and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University where he specializes in the comprehensive conservative management of spine disorders. He is internationally recognized as a physician leader in rehabilitation and spine disorders with over 100 publications in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. He is a Past President of the Spine Intervention Society (SIS) and is Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the journal Interventional Pain Medicine. He has served as Deputy Editor for The Spine Journal and on the Board of Directors of the North American Spine Society (NASS), the Spine Interventions Society, and the Foundation for PM&R. His research is focused on improving the safety and effectiveness of spine interventions, and on the use of mobile technology to improve musculoskeletal and neurologic disease detection, treatment and prevention. This work is recognized with numerous national and international awards including: the ISSLS Medtronic Award, the American Academy of PM&R’s President’s Citation Award, the PM&R Journal’s Best Original Research Award, the ISSLS Prize, numerous Outstanding Paper Awards from The Spine Journal, the AAPM&R PASSOR Legacy Award, and the NASS Henry Farfan Award.
