(Scientific Session) Increasing Resident Knowledge of and Orientation to Skilled Nursing Facility Level Rehabilitation

Background and/or Objectives: PM&R residency prepares residents for physiatric practice as attending physiatrists. Focused SNF rehabilitation training through residency should increase resident knowledge of and orientation to SNF Level Rehabilitation and possibly result in choosing to work in a SNF as an attending physiatrist. The objective of this study is to increase SNF rehabilitation knowledge and orientation through a SNF-focused education program provided to physiatry residents.

Design: A SNF rehabilitation curriculum was developed consisting of four formal lectures, six required-reading peer-reviewed articles, and one SNF physiatrist-mentored half-day per week at a SNF.

Setting: Physiatry residency at an academic institution.

Participants: PGY-3 physiatry residents

Interventions: not applicable

Main Outcome Measures: On completion of the curriculum, residents complete a survey rating the curriculum, and a pre- and post-test

Results: Survey: 57% of residents rated the curriculum as good, 29% of residents rated the curriculum as very good, and 14% of residents rated the curriculum as poor. No residents rated the curriculum as fair or great. In response to the amount of time spent at the SNF, 57% of residents responded just right, 29% of residents responded too short, and 14% of residents responded too long. Pre- and Post-Test: Residents completing the curriculum demonstrated knowledge attainment as demonstrated by marked improvements from pre- to post-test scores.

Conclusions: SNF rehabilitation is an important setting for provision of rehabilitative care. Physiatrists are the ideal medical practitioner to manage rehabilitation at an SNF. Physiatry residents are interested in SNF rehabilitation and gain knowledge through SNF rehabilitation education during residency training. By providing the unique and focused SNF education and experience during residency, graduating attending physiatrists will be ideally suited to provide excellent, impactful and efficient rehabilitative care.
