Martin Barylak is fourth year medical student at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and an aspiring physiatrist set to graduate in May 2024. Born in Poland and growing up in Los Angeles, his journey into medicine was sparked during his undergraduate years at Boston College, where he earned a B.S. in Biology with a Minor in Psychoanalytic Studies in 2018. Subsequently, Martin worked at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA working on clinical trials in the baldder cancer space.
Martin is dedicated to the field of PM&R as evidenced through his impactful research contributions. Collaborating with respected mentors, he has delved into critical areas such as pediatric spinal muscular atrophy, COVID-19-related critical illness myopathy and polyneuropathy, innovative stem cell therapy applications, ankle arthritis and arthroplasty affects on fall risk, and TBI research in withdrawal of life sustaining treatment. Many of his research projects have been presented at national PM&R conferences, and this is his second time returning to AAPM&R's national assembly.
Martin's dedication to the field also transcends research. He's an active volunteer and mentor, engaging with organizations like the Association of Academic Physiatrists in their "Big Buddy" mentoring program and holding multiple professional pm&r memberships. Martin founded and led the VTCSOM Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group, fostering an environment for students to explore and appreciate PM&R.
His well-rounded approach to life encompasses hobbies like basketball, ultimate frisbee, comedy, cooking, and playing the piano.
