Dr. Alexis Tingan is the current director of the Division of Sports and Exercise Medicine and the program director for the sports medicine fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University. In his role as the division director, Dr. Tingan oversees the advancement of the division’s clinical, educational, research, and community service initiatives. He is also the head team physician for Thomas Jefferson University Athletics and is an assistant professor of Rehabilitation Medicine and Family and Community Medicine at Jefferson. Dr. Tingan has a particular clinical interest in running and exercise medicine and has served on the USA Track and Field Sports Medicine and Science Committee and as a team physician for Team USA. Dr. Tingan is also the Co-Medical Director for the Penn Relays.
A native of Beaumont, TX, Dr. Tingan received his Bachelor of Arts in Molecular Biology from Princeton University and received his medical degree from Emory University. Dr. Tingan completed internship in general surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Pennsylvania. During his final year, he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Tingan then completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to his time at Jefferson, Dr. Tingan was an assistant professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania where he held numerous academic and administrative roles including medical director of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation, and Sports Medicine for Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital, co-director of the Penn Running and Endurance Sports Program, medical director of the Penn Relays, medical director of the Philadelphia Love Run Half Marathon, co-medical director of the Blue Cross Broad St. Run, and team physician for the University of Pennsylvania Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country teams.
