Ai Mukai, MD, FAAPMR, has been in private practice in a large multidisciplinary Orthopedic group (Texas Orthopedics Sports and Rehabilitation Associates, a division of OrthoLoneStar) in Austin, Texas, since 2009. She received her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, and finished her Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (now known as the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab). She then completed her pain fellowship at the UCLA-West Los Angeles Veterans Administration program; joining the Texas Orthopedics Sports and Rehabilitation Associates after her training.
Dr. Mukai has been actively involved with AAPM&R for more than 20 years since she was a fourth-year medical student. She has held several Academy positions including president of the Resident Physician Council (now known as the Physiatrists-In-Training Board or PHIT), Membership Committee chair, Board of Governors member for 5 years as well as currently co-editor of The Physiatrist member newsletter. She received the Distinguished Clinician Award from the AAPM&R in 2019. She is an affiliate faculty member at University of Texas Dell Medical School PM&R Residency Program.
