Beyond Borders: Exploring the Practice of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Across the Globe

Session Description: In this thought-provoking session, we explore the diverse and dynamic landscape of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) across the world. This session seeks to provide a deeper knowledge of the practice of PM&R globally by drawing on the perspectives of experts from other continents. Our panelists represent physiatric practice across 3 continents – Asia, Latin America, Africa. Each speaker will explore the obstacles and unique rehabilitation approaches in their respective countries as well as the role of cultural and socioeconomic influences, collaborative models of care and innovative rehabilitation techniques utilized in their region of the world.

By examining various approaches, challenges, and advancements, we aim to broaden perspectives and bring the international perspective to this year’s Annual Assembly. Attendees will not only gain a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, socioeconomic and systematic influences on global health, but will also have the opportunity to determine solutions to the unique challenges practicing in other countries may bring. The primary goal would be to inspire and promote cross cultural collaboration to help bridge gaps in access, delivery and quality of international physiatric care and facilitate knowledge exchange. The session also provides a platform for our colleagues from around the world to present the advances and innovative solutions in rehabilitation medicine.

This session is for those interested in international rehabilitation and global health, policy and advocacy, health disparities in rehabilitation medicine, and public health. The session will have a combination of lectures, group work, and discussion sessions with Q&A.
