Member Community Host: Performing Arts Medicine
Session Description: Performing artists are unique patients that use their body to create art. As such, they may play through the pain, ignore existing injuries, and accept these as a “badge of honor” and “normal part of being an artist”; seeking medical attention may be perceived as being weak or non-professional. As physiatrists, our focus on optimizing function makes us well suited to prevent and manage the injuries of performing artists. While all physiatrists have the basic skills to evaluate and treat a wide range of neurologic and musculoskeletal issues, performing artists may have unique clinical considerations and specific medical conditions that may need special attention.

During this session, we will review common injuries and treatment strategies in less discussed dance genres, including in Break Dance- the new addition to the 2024 Olympic Games. Management of unique injuries, from ergonomic set up of the instrumentalist, to anxiety and concussion management of the performer will be addressed. Applications of ultrasound to diagnosing injuries in the musician and shockwave therapy for treatment of musculoskeletal symptoms in the performer will be discussed.
