Session Description: Lymphedema treatment is the cornerstone of many cancer rehabilitation programs in the United States. Rehabilitation physicians frequently become one of the few providers in healthcare settings who diagnose and assist in lymphedema management, and a thorough understanding of the disease process and treatment is crucial for providing effective care. Recently, there have been substantial advancements in diagnostic and treatment options for lymphedema and for the prevention of cancer-related lymphedema. This session will provide a high-level review of these landmark advancements, discuss challenging presentations of lymphedema through case studies (central lymphatic obstructions, abdominal and scrotal lymphedema, head and neck lymphedema), and share examples of institution-specific multidisciplinary care pathways for lymphedema management.

Why is this session needed? : Rehabilitation physicians frequently have the opportunity in their practice settings to become the "owners" of lymphedema management. Being up-to-date on diagnostic and treatment options and understanding how to treat challenging cases will allow physiatrists to become better clinical leaders in the field of lymphatic disease. While there have been a few excellent sessions at Annual Assemblies over the last several years that have discussed lymphedema, sessions have primarily focused on aspects of complete decongestive therapy and breast-cancer related lymphedema. This session will: 1) discuss clinical aspects of central lymphatic obstructions, massive localized abdominal and scrotal lymphedema, and head and neck internal and external lymphedema, 2) diagnosis through modalities such as MRI lymphangiogram and indocyanine green lymphography, and 3) provide updates on lymphovenous anastomosis,

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the most up-to-date diagnostic and treatment options for lymphedema, including use of MRI lymphangiogram, indocyanine green, lymphovenous anastomosis/bypass, and vascularized lymph node transfer.
  • Explain how central lymphatic obstructions can present in the cancer patient and the treatment options available.
  • Provide effective diagnostic and treatment options for abdominal and scrotal lymphedema.
  • Describe how to diagnose internal and external head and neck lymphedema and treatment options.
  • Understand how to develop a successful multidisciplinary lymphedema and lymphatic disease treatment program.
