Session Description: Physiatrists who purse sports medicine fellowship training and pass their certificate of added qualification examination have shown significant interest in participating in leadership positions such as team physicians at the collegiate, professional, and Olympic and Paralympic levels of sport. However, there are obstacles that may not be obvious to trainees or younger sports medicine physiatrists from progressing to leadership positions in sports medicine. Further, with high level sports associations developing their own health and safety policies that may limit opportunities for sports medicine physiatrists to serve in leadership roles, it is imperative that information is provided to those interested in pursing a career in this subspecialty field. The information in this session is intended to provide insights, guidance, and recommendations of how to progress in the field of sports medicine from various perspectives.

Learning Objectives:

  • As a result of attending this session, participants will gain appreciation of the challenges involved in participating in leadership roles of high level of sports medicine.
  • Attendees will apply information learned in this session towards their own careers as a means to further their own faculty development in the field of sports medicine.
  • Participants will accumulate information gained by attending this session that provides opportunities to participate in higher levels of sport medicine nationally and internationally.
