Physical performance is one of the best predictors of morbidity and mortality in cancer survivors. While patient-reported outcomes can be as sensitive as objective data in predicting adverse events, they can not be readily converted into actionable restorative care plans. Furthermore, objective functional performance metrics are not widely utilized in cancer rehabilitation and many of the standard validated instruments, such as timed sit-to-stand tests exclude significant portion of the survivor population. Cancer survivors face multiple barriers to restorative care, a situation made worse by the pandemic-related challenges. The global aim of our session is to provide rehabilitation professionals with tools for more effective patient education, restorative care planning, and successful adoption of functional measures into daily cancer rehabilitation practice.

Learning Objectives:

Define the Warburg Effect, the one century journey to understand cancer metabolism in order to target cancer. Apply that concept to patient education, including goal setting and activity modification.
Describe the concept of “metabolic rehabilitation,” individualized exercise prescription in order to counter the decrease of metabolic function in cancer patients during treatment and beyond.
demonstrate an understanding of the physical function of cancer patients and survivors as self-reported through patient reported outcome instruments.
demonstrate an understanding of the physical function of cancer patients and survivors as reported through objective metrics: the sit-to-stand, timed-up-and-go, grip strength and 4-stage balance tests.
adapt functional testing procedure for various degree of disability and derive a meaningful outcome metric, suitable for both cross-sectional and longitudinal research.
use the results of adapted functional testing to generate a personalized training program, suitable for home use.
