Session Description: In their 4th and final installment, this interactive session will be a panel discussion/ debate surrounding hot topics in sports and musculoskeletal medicine featuring 4 prominent, experienced sports medicine physicians and a host/ moderator to keep us on track. Part fun but very educational topics likely to be discussed for this year are: ACL reconstruction in middle aged active persons, treatment of recalcitrant lateral elbow pain, when to repair rotator cuff tears, how to treat degenerative meniscal tears in middle aged weekend warriors, and possibly more. Dr. Joel Press will be the session moderator/ game show host and the other 4 physicians will be the panelists.

Why is this session needed? : There will be evidence based medicine discussed here, but also will bee expert opinion from 4 physicians who are at least 20 years into their practices and experts in their regions of the country. This has been presented before over zoom and last year in person and has been well received by audiences. We want to do this one more time and then consider passing on the torch but keeping this light hearted but educational setting at our academy meeting.

Was this session previously presented at the Annual Assembly?: this will be the 4th. year of presenting this format but will cover different topics from previous years.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of ACL reconstruction in the active middle aged population.
  • Discuss the treatment options for medial knee pain in active adults
  • Understand the rational for imaging and treatment recommendations of low back pain in young athletes.
  • Understand what options are available to athletes with lateral elbow pain that have failed traditional treatments.
