37 U.S. states + D.C. have now approved Cannabis for Medical use, with continued growth expected in the coming years. Modern research suggests that Cannabis is a valuable aid in the treatment of a wide range of clinical applications. These include pain relief, particularly neuropathic pain, nausea, spasticity, seizures, and movement disorders. Cannabis has complex properties that provide analgesia, muscle relaxation, appetite stimulation, and sleep induction, which are extremely valuable in the management of neurodegenerative diseases, chronic pain, and cancer. Cannabinoid Medicine is a burgeoning field, and there is a vast knowledge and practice gap within medical school education and residency training. It is essential that PM&R physicians familiarize themselves with its therapeutic potential, risks, benefits, and regulatory guidelines in order to make intelligent informed decisions on behalf of the patients they serve.

Learning Objectives:

  • Determine best practices for providing medical cannabis product recommendations to patients, especially for first time users.
  • Identify appropriate candidates for medical cannabis treatment within a PM&R, orthopedic, and pain management practice.
  • Recall chemical constituents of cannabis in order to educate patients on medically appropriate products.
  • Describe the administrative aspects of creating and maintaining a medical cannabis practice.
  • Review the clinical evidence for the use of medical cannabis in the management of spastic hypertonicity and neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Review current legal and regulatory issues that impact a medical cannabis practice.
  • Identify unique aspects of Veteran patient care in a Medical Cannabis practice.
  • Review the role of the endocannabinoid system in homeostasis and implications in disease states.
