Pain management requires an understanding of cultural and practical considerations to ensure effective and equitable care in diverse populations. Cultural considerations involve understanding cultural background, beliefs, and values of the patient that may impact pain presentation. Practical considerations involve looking at those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, racial and ethnic minorities. These individuals are subjected to additional barriers such as transportation, language, and mistrust of the healthcare system.

Pain management in a diverse population can be nuanced due to a multitude of factors including cultural differences, socioeconomic status, and the accompanying barriers to healthcare. Healthcare disparities may be amplified by additional discrimination and traumatic experiences (in and out of the healthcare system) which may adversely impact associated mood, disability, pain intensity and other pain-related outcomes. Guiding principles of trauma-based care should be integrated into the rehabilitation practice. Physicians that acknowledge the vast cultural and practical differences are better equipped in managing their patient’s pain and quality of life. With a diverse expert panel, this session will engage the audience and showcase possible differences in outcomes with different management options.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the relationships between patient-related factors, including gender, race/ethnicity, age, and socioeconomic status, on the amplification of health care disparities among these diverse populations and their impact in pain-related outcomes.
  • Understand how trauma may have long lasting effects in physical, emotional, or potentially molecular physiological effects and identify the importance of integrating trauma-informed care in clinical practice.
  • Incorporate strategies in different clinical settings (acute, post-acute, chronic, end of life) and presentation that may optimize access to pertinent pain management interventions.
