SCI Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) are supported and published by the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine. This session will provide participants with an opportunity to hear and discuss updated recommendations from three recently published CPGs: Evaluation and Management of Autonomic Dysreflexia and Other Autonomic Dysfunctions; Bone Health and Osteoporosis Management in Individuals with SCI; and Management of Mental Health Disorders, Substance Use Disorders, and Suicide in Adults with SCI.

While these CPGs are available for free download through the PVA website, there has thus far been limited proactive dissemination of this important material, particularly to the numerous general PM&R physicians who do not specialize in SCI care but do see individuals with SCI as part of their practice. It is critical that all providers who care for individuals with SCI receive and integrate these new guidelines into their routine care for individuals with SCI.

  • Explain the process of Clinical Practice Guideline Development.
  • Discuss the updated CPG recommendations related to Autonomic Dysfunctions after SCI.
  • Understand the new CPG recommendations related to Osteoporosis and Bone Health after SCI.
  • Explain the updated and new CPG recommendations related to Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders in Adults with SCI.
  • Discuss the management principles for an individual with a spinal cord injury who has concurrent conditions from each of the CPGs being presented.
