Recent studies have shown increasing Physician burnout in recent years with upwards of 60% of Physicians surveyed reporting some signs/symptoms of burnout. The AHRQ has funded at least two major studies looking at Physician burnout and it's impact on patient safety and quality of care. Within PM&R, a study by the ABPMR in 2019 showed the rate of burnout in Physiatrists similar to that of Physicians in general, at 51.6%. A study by Farr et al. in 2022 examined some unique concerns surrounding burnout in In-patient Rehabilitation Facilities (IRF). A work-group has been formed by the AAP, ABPMR,and AAPMR in 2021 to identify interventions to help improve burnout in the Physiatric population.

We think that giving some practical tips to improve efficiency in work and life would be helpful in reducing symptoms of burnout and this session is needed to start that conversation. We hope to offer practical tips and pearls to maximize clinic flow, covering both in-patient and out-patient settings, and to streamline documentation to reduce time spent on prior authorization and other insurance requirements. We will cover how to advance one's career in academic medicine pursuing research, teaching, and clinical practice efficiently. We will also discuss life hacks to simplify managing family/personal life and work to maximize quality time. Residents would benefit from learning efficiency early in their careers. This will also appeal to those who have already started practicing who may be suffering from burnout and struggling with the loss of personal time and increasing work demands.
