Physiatrists love their patients. Physiatrists love the human body. Physiatrists see value in what they do. Physiatrists relieve pain, find ways to get people to walk, and restore quality of life. But despite these facts, the specialty is experiencing a crisis of joy. Recent burnout rates cite that PM&R is in the top 5 worst specialties for physician burnout, despite being the specialty with some of the best personalities and best people. The primary goal of this session is to discuss ways to provide more joy in physiatry. This session will showcase the excitement most of have early in our career to remind us the reason why we initially matched into this profession (Megan Stodola). We will discuss alternative rewarding ventures, such as into academic medicine, research, and volunteerism (Nathan Olafsen and Matthew McLaughlin). Finally, there will be a short presentation on the career path of someone who has decided to take on a significant administrative role by serving as a Department Chair (Heakyung Kim).

Following some introductory remarks, a guided panel discussion will outline the reasons each presenter chose their individual career path and how they aligned their personal mission with their joys at work. A distinct point will be made to ensure both academic and private practice correlations will be discussed. Nearing the end of the presentation, a short description of the benefit of advanced degrees and a point-counterpoint will be conducted by members of the panel to comment on whether these are required for career advancement.

Relate the different routes each physiatrist chose to their direct relationship to joy in their careers.
Establish a personal career plan to work to implement more joyful tasks in each participant's career.
