Session Description: The basis of using electroneuromyography (ENMG) is to provide information about neurophysiologic status of the
anterior horn cell, peripheral nervous system, neuromuscular junction and muscle. Findings obtained from EMG
are used to clarify abnormalities and to establish a diagnosis consistent with the clinical characteristics.
Physiatrists are more interested in the musculoskeletal-nervous system than any other specialists. We have deep knowledge
on neuroanatomy, so we are the closest branch of the medicine to learn and do it. While examinations such as
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) focus on structural problems, EMG provides functional
information about the peripheral nervous system

Ultrasound evaluation can provide a structural evaluation of the nerves. Various studies evaluating the size of the
nerves will be discussed. EMG provides the functional evaluation and ultrasound can provide the structural evaluation of
the nerve and structures around it.

Why is this session needed? : This is a comprehensive session for evaluation nerves. Putting two techniques together is the important in this
day and age to completely evaluate a nerve both structurally and electro physiologically.

It will broaden the outlook of physiatrists in evaluating peripheral nerves

  • Implement the use of ultrasound evaluation with EMG for evaluation of a peripheral nerve.
  • Demonstrate subluxation of ulnar nerve at cubital tunnl.
  • Definer anatomy of the nerves and structures around the nerves (e.g ganglion) which affect them
  • Conduct structural and electrophysiological evaluation of a peripheral nerve referred for EMG
