Understanding and Managing Pediatric Fractures

Fractures are frequently encountered when evaluating sports and other acute musculoskeletal injuries, especially in the pediatric population. This session will provide an overview of the principles of pediatric fractures: terminology, classification, growth and remodeling. Through case reviews, the faculty will present the clinical pearls of diagnosis and treatment of common and significant pediatric fractures by body region: what to watch for and when to refer. The physiatrist’s presence and role in musculoskeletal, sports medicine and orthopedic clinics continues to expand. A growing number of PM&R trainees pursue fellowship in sports medicine. In order to be able and comfortable in treating acute musculoskeletal conditions members of AAPM&R need to triage pediatric fractures. This session will provide a foundation for members to better understand these injuries how and when to treat and when to refer. Our faculty is made up of 3 physiatrists with Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine practicing at academic medical centers, treating pediatric athletes from sideline, clinic, and musculoskeletal urgent care. This session serves as a continuation of the “Clinical Pearls of Pediatric Sports Medicine” series of sessions that have been part of the Annual Assembly each of the past several years. Smaller fracture topics have been introduced previously in those sessions though not in depth.
