Session Description: This session will focus on recent advances in spasticity management, including updated evidence of phenol neurolysis, new development of cryoneurolysis, and other non-invasive treatment options, such as extracorporeal shock wave therapy.

Why is this session needed? : Botulinum toxin therapy has been commonly used in spasticity management. Botulinum toxin therapy has many advantages, such as well-documented efficacy in the literature, expected duration of treatment, and excellent patient tolerance and safety profile. However, Botulinum toxin therapy may not be adequate to reduce spasticity in large muscles, and in those with severe spasticity. Furthermore, the total amount of botulinum toxin may be limited by the insurance. This session focuses on other treatment options that can meet the needs. Phenol neurolysis was widely used in last century, but became a dying art after botulinum toxin therapy gains popularity. Advances in guidance techniques have rejuvenated this technique. Cryoneurolysis is an exciting new development for spasticity management. It is still in its early development stage. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is a non-invasive treatment option which have been used mostly outside the US. Comparisons of these treatment options with botulinum toxin therapy will be discussed. The audience will be able to learn more informative and clinically relevant details regarding these treatment options.
