Session Description: This session with review techniques for management of neurogenic bowel. Items to be presented include: (1) review of the intrinsic changes to the gastrointestinal system as a result of neurologic injury; (2) the utility of trans-anal irrigation in the management of neurogenic bowel, including implementation strategies using a multidisciplinary team; (3) the potential benefit on neuromodulation techniques including sacral nerve stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation and magnetic stimulation; and (4) understanding of the possible surgical options for management including the Malone Anterograde Colonic Enema (MACE), the Chait cecostomy catheter and traditional ostomy creation.

Why is this session needed? : Neurogenic bowel dysfunction is a common rehabilitation problem encountered by physiatrists. Multiple disease states can result in neurogenic bowel dysfunction include spinal cord injury, spina bifida, parkinsons disease, multiple sclerosis, etc. Poorly controlled neurogenic bowel function can results in constipation, abdominal pain, fecal incontinence, bowel obstruction, rectal prolapse, skin breakdown, psychological distress and nutritional deficiencies. This session will enable physiatrist to utilize all of the potential tools available to optimize patient management. The faculty is multidisciplinary including physiatry, urology, neurology and rehabilitation nursing.
