Session Description: Physiatrists and prosthetists may work closely together as part of a team to provide optimal functional outcomes for patients with amputation. Case reviews will be presented to provide examples of longitudinal management during the rehabilitation pre-prosthetic and prosthetic phases of care of these patients. Common items addressed will include management of residual limb wounds, limb shaping, considerations in prosthesis prescription, and adaptations of devices as patients sustain changes in their residual limbs and function.

Why is this session needed? : Physiatrists may use their training and experience to manage the rehabilitation for patients with amputation, often working directly with prosthetists and other rehabilitation team members to provide optimal functional outcomes.
This session will expand the knowledge base of understanding for physiatrists in the management of patients with amputation, including case examples with photos and videos to enhance common presentations and management of issues encountered in amputee rehabilitation.
Physiatrists entering practice may be familiar with some aspects of rehabilitation care for patients with amputation at specific points in time, but may lack knowledge of longitudinal management for these patients. This session will enhance understanding of management by using a case studies approach over time as patient undergo pre-prosthetic and prosthetic training.
The goal of this session is to improve understanding of prosthetic rehabilitation for patients with amputation to optimize functional outcomes.

  • Increase ability to manage patients with amputation rehabilitation needs for pre-prosthetic and prosthetic training needs.
  • Increase their understanding of complications and challenges for patients with pre-prosthetic and prosthetic rehabilitation needs.
  • Increase knowledge of wound management and limb shaping needs for patients in pre-prosthetic and prosthetic rehabilitation for amputation.
  • Increase knowledge of prosthetic adjustments for fit that patients undergoing prosthetic training may need to optimize functional outcome.
