While many physiatrists recognize the value of using their voice to advocate for their patients, not all physiatrists are equipped with the knowledge of how to advocate for themselves and their specialty. Now more than ever, it is critical for physiatrists to individually and collectively advocate on issues related to scope of practice, reimbursement, medical policy, and more. This session will highlight experiences from PM&R physicians that are successfully pursuing advocacy opportunities at the local, state, and federal level. The intent is to introduce members to the vital impact their collective voice has on the specialty as well as empower more AAPM&R members to get involved in key health policy issues. Participants will learn how to identify advocacy opportunities related to their patients, practice, and community. They will also learn ways to use the Academy as a resource in these initiatives including an outline of tools that can be utilized to communicate directly with a member of Congress, present a resolution to the AMA House of Delegates, and participate in further advocacy training and initiatives.

Learning Objectives:

Understand basic lobbying techniques and best practices for meeting with state and federal legislators.
Identify advocacy opportunities and engage with the Academy on shared priorities at the local, state, and national level.
Participate in current grassroots campaigns and encourage physiatry colleagues to engage in advocacy on topics they are concerned about.
