Sports medicine is a popular sub-specialty within physiatry. Coverage of sporting events is a requirement to obtain board certification and plays an important role in one's ability to market his or her practice. Many physicians - even those not pursuing a dedicated career in sports medicine - are interested in performing these duties, but are uncomfortable having not had specific training. This lab will provide in-depth training on the essentials of sideline medicine. Participants will develop skills in spine boarding, evaluating concussion, performing the e-FAST ultrasound protocol, as well as managing fractures, dislocations, pneumothoraces, and finish line conditions.

The session will start with a brief presentation on the fundamentals of sideline coverage. Following this, participants will separate into small groups and rotate between sections that include spine boarding, concussion evaluation and management, e-FAST ultrasound protocol training, fracture and dislocation management, pneumothorax management, and equipment removal.

1. Spine boarding (participants will learn about and practice various spine immobilization techniques)

2. Concussion evaluation (participants will learn how to and practice the sideline concussion evaluation)

3. e-FAST (participants will learn how to and practice the e-FAST protocol to assess for visceral injury)

4. Fractures and Dislocations (participants will learn how to and practice managing acute dislocations and fractures, including splinting)

5. Equipment removal and Pneumothorax Management (participants will learn how to and practice removing football equipment, and managing pneumothorax on the sideline).

Learning Objectives:

Describe the role of a team physician as it pertains to sideline coverage, including the responsibilities of ensuring safe participation in sport.
Identify potential catastrophic injuries and initiate appropriate initial management, such as for cervical spine injury, heat illness, and tension pneumothorax.
Evaluate an athlete for a concussion through a multi modal approach including the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool and Vestibular/Oculomotor Motor Screening.
Perform and interpret the Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma protocol.
