Hongkai Wang, MD, is a medical graduate and a current PhD candidate in neuroscience at the Shirley Ryan Abilitylab and Northwestern University. Hongkai is interested in respiratory rehabilitation in diaphragmatic paralysis. His research focuses on two main areas:
Diaphragm reinnervation using spinal accessory nerve transfer and electrical stimulation for faster and more effective functional recovery in conditions such as phrenic nerve palsy and high spinal cord injury.
Developing a resorbable wireless battery-free diaphragm pacer for the acute phase of diaphragmatic paralysis to preserve muscle regardless of the underlying cause.
Hongkai is actively seeking a residency training opportunity in physiatry after completing his PhD in 2024. He is also eager to secure away rotations and observerships in the current academic year. His ultimate career goal is to become a physician-scientist specializing in the field of neurorehabilitation.
