Dr. Ellen completed his residency at The Boston University and his Sports Medicine Fellowship at the renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles. He joined the faculty of The University of Pennsylvania as a Shoulder Injury and Sports Medicine specialist. He became the first non-opersative Team Physician at UPENN, later Head Team Physician. Recruited to Emory University he served as Team Physician there as well as a consultant to Georgia Tech, Oglethorpe University and The Atlanta Ballet. Dr. Ellen was recruited away from Emory to the pharmaceutical industry for a short time, returning to clinical office orthopedic practice at the Birmingham VAMC, where he also served as a sideline physician for the Conference USA Basketball Tournaments and The Golden Age Games. He was then recruited to Johns Hopkins University to serve as the Physiatric lead in Sports Medicine, where he covered Varsity Womens Lacrosse as well as the Womens Big 10 and NCAA Division 1 Championships.
Dr. Ellen has authored several papers, chapters and Sports Medicine Treatment Guidelines including The 1999 AAPMR Sports Medicine Teaching Syllabus and The 2017 Sports Medicine Physiatric Residency/ Fellowsnhip Guidelines. He served as a Liaison to AAOS for the Writing Groups of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for ACL care, Appropriate Use Guidelines for Non-Arthroplastic Care of Knee Osteoarthritis and The Performance Measures Work Group for Total Knee Arthroplasty. He has also served as a reviewer for the Academy on several other AAOS practice guidelines. He developoed the Academy'sonline MOC 3 review course for Industrial Medicine.
Dr. Ellen currently serves as the Inaugural Chair of The Academy's Sports Medicine Community as well as the Evidence Committee. He also currentkly serves as the Co-Chair of the Academy's GME Musculoskeletal Work Group.
Recently, Dr. Ellen was named as a Sports Medicine physician at the University of Florida
