John Robert Hermansen, M.D. is a staff physician at the Richmond Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he currently serves as Regional Amputation Center Medical Director and Co-Director of the their Amputation Care and Musculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship. He joined the VA Health Care system in 2021 after completing his Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. His career interests include amputation care, ultrasound medicine, Orthobiologics, prosthetic development, digital design, additive manufacturing (3D printing), and adaptive sports of all kinds (with a particular fondness for cycling). He is currently involved with research involving amputee gait, osseointegration, using peripheral nerve stimulation to treat back, shoulder, and residual limb pain, as well as the use of ketamine infusions to treat acute and chronic amputee pain. Additional areas of focus include strengthening VA facility adaptive cycling programs and collaboration within the VA system to investigate the use of digital scanning, design, and advanced manufacturing in Orthotics & Prosthetics.
