James W. Atchison, DO is the Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Mayo Clinic Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Atchison is a nationally recognized teacher and researcher in the fields of PM&R, spine care, and pain management while spending his entire clinical career in academic medical centers including the University of Kentucky, the University of Florida, and Northwestern University prior to joining the Mayo Clinic a little more than a year ago. For the previous six years he served as Medical Director of the Pain Management Center at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly know at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) in Chicago, Illinois. He directed an Interdisciplinary Pain Management/Functional Restoration program for persons with chronic pain syndromes, and published/presented extensively on the results of this type of treatment. Prior to his work in Chicago, he spent 17 years at the University of Florida where he served as Chief of the Division of PM&R, Medical Director of Shands Rehab Hospital, and Medical Director of the UF SpineCare Center. While there he developed his interest and expertise in the evaluation and treatment/rehabilitation of non-operative spine problems (acute, subacute or chronic) with emphasis on patient-centered exercise, manual, cognitive, and movement-based therapies. In 2010, Dr. Atchison was presented with the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR) Distinguished Clinician Award, and in 2022 he received the AAPM&R Distinguished Member Award. .
