This session is focuses on helping Physiatrists be better advocates for their patients by reviewing how accessibility laws/ordinances are made and how those living with physical disabilities are successfully advocating for accessible spaces in local and national transit. We have a local lawmaker, the board chair of the transit authority for a major US city, and military veteran skilled at advocacy coming together to center the needs of our patients and provide a policy primer for physicians focused on caring for those with disability. This exciting session is a way for clinicians and academicians to enhance their impact beyond an individual patient/family in the clinic to impact their entire community as a whole.

Learning Objectives:

Review relevant federal laws around disability.
Summarize the process of municipal policy creation.
Review opportunities to proactively and retrofit public transportation for those using wheeled mobility.
Review airline and train travel policies affecting accessibility.
Present pearls to help Physiatrists be stronger advocates for those with physical disabilities.
