Member Community Host: Exercise as Medicine
Aerobic exercise as a rehabilitation therapeutic intervention is underutilized in the rehabilitation continuum. Evidence supporting the value of aerobic exercise in optimizing functional outcomes, health / wellbeing – primary and secondary disease prevention – is overwhelmingly positive. We will discuss aerobic exercise and present data supporting aerobic exercise as medicine – primary and secondary prevention and biologic mechanisms associated. We will discuss when to prescribe aerobic exercise - data supporting utilization early in the recovery / rehabilitative process, ongoing throughout the continuum of recovery to wellness. We will provide details on prescribing exercise – dosing: frequency, duration, intensity, progression. Practical tips will be provided including monitoring, do’s and don'ts, outcomes evaluations. We will educate and empower all physiatrists how to harness aerobic exercise to optimize function and health outcomes.

We will focus on aerobic exercise in oncologic rehabilitation, neurologic rehabilitation (ALS, SCI, brain injury, stroke), and medically complex rehabilitation (cardiac, pulmonary, peripheral arterial disease). Presenters will represent multiple communities (but submitted by the Exercise as Medicine Community): Cancer Rehabilitation; Central Nervous System; Neuromuscular Medicine and Electrodiagnosis, Brain Injury Medicine, Exercise as Medicine.

We will start with a lecture format to present the data. We will then transition into a panel Q/A format for moderator and audience questions. We will end with an open discussion on how those already utilizing aerobic exercise have integrated it into the care of their patients, as well as discuss research opportunities.

Learning Objectives:

  • discuss the evidence supporting aerobic exercise as an impactful and essential modality in the rehabilitative functional recovery of disabling neurologic, oncologic and medically complex conditions
  • write an appropriate prescription for aerobic exercise at all stages of medical and functional recovery from disabling neurologic, oncologic and medically complex conditions
  • outline how to monitor patients participating in aerobic exercise as part of their rehabilitation programs to ensure medical and functional safety throughout recovery
  • discuss outcome measures that support the success of the aerobic exercise interventions in rehabilitation from disabling neurologic, oncologic and medically complex conditions
  • develop professional networks of like-minded Physiatrists who are utilizing aerobic exercise as medicine in medical /functional recovery to foster ongoing discussions, learning and implementation of aerobic exercise in recovery programs
