1- Rehabilitation of the Pediatric Patient with Heart Failure. Sarah Helen (Sally) Evans, MD
We describe the functional deficits associated with heart failure as well as those associated with the treatment of heart failure, especially for those patients with congenital heart failure.

2- Inflammatory CNS conditions of the Brain: An Under recognized contributor to chronic disorders like CP? Mary Keen MD and Larissa Pavone.
-A 17 yo with quad CP in association with extreme preterm birth developed progressive depression and psychosis unresponsive to any medications and who died suddenly in her sleep.
-A 16 yo with quad CP in association with extreme preterm birth who had a baclofen pump for severe spasticity. After scoliosis surgery, he developed an inflammatory process in his cervical spine and a clear cut SCI level at C6-7 as well as confusion ; he also had severe pain that responded to steroids but not interventions for central pain or spasticity despite very severe spasticity; he died suddenly in his sleep about one year after his scoliosis surgery .
-A 7-year-old with diplegic CP in association with 28 week preterm birth and PVL who has been experiencing physical and behavioral regression over about 18 months with negative workup except for elevations of interleukin 5.

3- Bridging the GAP: Traversing the Transition Divide. Jensine’ Clark and Cristina Sarmiento
This session will address three components of transition today, the GAP: Getting Ready, Addressing Adult Concerns, and Preventing Long-Term Sequelae.

Learning Objectives:

  • Utilize clinical and practice-based strategies to develop an effective, patient- and family-centered transition program.
  • Describe issues unique to the transition-age youth and how these impact the transition to adulthood.
  • Understand therapeutic differences in therapy interventions for patients as they transition from pediatric to adult centered healthcare
  • Incorporate general medical and rehabilitation specific strategies to optimize healthy aging in adults with childhood-onset disabilities. Utilize physiatric principles to address changing functional status for patients as they age
