This resident bootcamp will provide an overview of procedural interventions that Pain Medicine providers can offer for patients. This bootcamp will be especially helpful for residents who are considering a career in chronic pain management. Experts from the field will teach at stations designed to help residents become more familiar with chronic pain interventions, how to perform a thorough neurological and musculoskeletal physical exam, and how to perform common nerve blocks under ultrasound. In addition, residents will receive an overview of regenerative medicine, neuromodulation using a spinal cord stimulator, and basic surgical skills.

5. Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks – Upper Extremity station
6. Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks – Lower Extremity station
7. Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks – Cervical station
8. Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks – Abdominal station

Why is this lab needed?
Applying for pain medicine fellowships is competitive and early exposure to pain medicine is often limited in residency training programs. This bootcamp has been designed to help residents obtain a comprehensive understanding of how to treat chronic pain from the perspective of an interventionist. Ultrasound has become a more commonly utilized imaging modality for diagnosing and treating pain. In addition, this workshop discusses some of the innovative aspects of chronic pain including neuromodulation and regenerative medicine. Having a station for practicing physical exam skills helps provide the foundation for residents to then identify how to approach a patient with chronic pain.

Learning Objectives:

  • Perform common ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. Residents will practice visualizing blocks for the upper extremity, lower extremity, abdomen/pelvis, and cervical spine/neck.
  • Review the indications, contraindications, risks, and benefits of regenerative medicine and neuromodulation.
  • Perform neurological and musculoskeletal physical exams.
  • Perform basic surgical skills required for neuromodulation implants (i.e. suturing, knot tying).
  • To have a better understanding and appreciation for the interventional options for treating chronic pain.
