There has been a growing trend among graduating physiatry residents pursuing subspecialty fellowships particularly in pain, spine, and sports medicine. As a result, the field may become more subspecialized with less physiatrists practicing general PM&R. This session aims to bring a diverse and well respected panel representing a general PM&R physiatrist, ABPMR board member with spinal cord injury certification, sports medicine-fellowship trained physiatrist who is a program director, and experienced physiatrist serving as dean of clinical affairs for a large academic medical center. We will discuss how the field is changing and whether they see this as positive and/or negative for the field and how this will impact the future of the field.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this session, participant will be able to describe the current landscape and trend among graduating residents who are entering fellowship training and obtaining subspecialty certification.
As a result of attending this session, participant will be able to discuss the advantages and/or possible disadvantages of increasing subspecialization within the field of PM&R.
As a result of attending this session, participant will be able to evaluate the impact of subspecialization within the field and how it impacts their current clinical practice.
