Session Description: Osteoarthritis is a very common cause of knee pain and impaired function that is of critical importance to the practicing Physiatrist. Post-traumatic osteoarthritis may affect younger adults 10- 20 years after trauma such as meniscus, cartilage or ligament injury. This course will update participants on the research, evidence and faculty experience regarding the mechanisms, prevention, and new treatments that are designed to avoid premature aging and symptomatic post-traumatic knee arthritis.

Why is this session needed? : This session is critically important as new research on the mechanisms of post traumatic knee arthritis are becoming known. These new insights may allow us to predict risk for development of osteoarthritis and focus on prevention of pain and disability. Dr Jayabalan is engaged in research on serum biomarkers that may predict who will develop knee arthritis. Dr. Bullock is co-author on the international consensus recommendations to optimize knee health after traumatic knee injury to prevent osteoarthritis. (OPTIKNEE 2022). Dr Tenforde is a Principal investigator in the Football Players Health Studies and is performing research on newer treatments for prevention and treatment of post-traumatic knee arthritis.
