As residents progress towards the end of training and look at potential fellowships, many are faced with the daunting task of determining the best program for their needs. Just like each trainee, every program has a unique personality. It is crucial for trainees to reflect and have a clear understanding of their own personal mission statement to will help guide future career decisions. A personal mission statement can direct goals for fellowship training and beyond to help maximize opportunities.

This workshop will provide a “how-to” guide to develop one's own personal mission statement, with the goal of using this statement to find the best fit fellowship program. We will outline a concrete approach to creating a personal mission statement by first identifying core values through reflection and introspection, defining the ideal scope and population to serve, and defining a vision for the future. The development of the mission statement and a few directed goals will occur on the individual level. This will be followed up with a panel discussion, as well as a session for applicants to identify values and goals at fellowship programs, including areas like research, mentorship, and clinical education. Next, there will be a small group discussion to identify potential stumbling blocks in drafting a mission statement and how statements may change over time. Through small group discussion, the attendees will be able to revise and refine their mission statement.

Learning Objectives:

  • First, the participants in this session will be able to identify key components of a mission statement and how a mission statement can lend clarity to goals.
  • Second, the participant will be able to use the session material to help create a clear mission statement that will help identify training environments that best suit their needs.
  • Third, the participant will be able to set realistic goals for the year ahead that will help maximize opportunities in training.
