Over the past decade, there has been an increase in the number of individuals with disabilities who participate in sports and recreation. As adaptive sports opportunities grow and the population of adaptive sports athletes increases, the need to provide sports medicine support for adaptive sports athletes has become more of a necessity. Physiatrists have the potential to play a key role in the sports medicine support of adaptive sports athletes. While more physiatrists may be interested in and aware of the need to provide more sports medicine support of athletes with disabilities, not all physiatrists feel well-equipped to provide this support due to lack of training, exposure, or experience.

This adaptive sports medicine skills lab, which includes ~90 minutes of pre-recorded presentations to watch prior to the skills lab followed by a 3-hour hands-on session to practice practical skills, will provide participants with the knowledge and skill-set needed to integrate adaptive sports medicine and care of the adaptive sports athlete into their clinical practice. Participants will be able to learn about many adaptive sports medicine topics and clinical applications, as well as practice hands-on sports medicine skills in mock scenarios.

Learning Objectives:

  • Facilitate and support ongoing participation and sports medicine needs of athletes with disabilities in multiple clinical settings, from clinic to event coverage.
  • Recognize medical considerations in adaptive sports athletes, including injury and illness epidemiology and prevention strategies, mental health, and apply this knowledge to clinical practice.
  • Increase their fund of knowledge related to a variety of adaptive sports activities, including rules and criteria for participation, equipment, prosthetics and orthotics, and classification if applicable.
  • Practice medical evaluation and management skills through high yield, hands-on mock scenarios relevant to adaptive sports and athletes.
