Description: : Many patients suffer from chronic pain and functional limitations due to severe degenerative osteoarthritis. Most consider replacement surgery as the main curative measure. However, the options are scares for those that are excluded from such therapy due to medical co-morbidities or personal constraints. The efficacy of ablation has been well established in the treatment of axial spine pain while its application to treat peripheral joints pain pain is yet novel and continues to be redefined.

This course is designed to review the anatomical innervation of the hip, knee and shoulder joints which establishes the foundation of treatment approach. The evolution of ablative techniques will be presented in parallel with the advancement of basic science and clinical research. Finally, the ultrasound guided technique for denervation of the joints based on the most updated evidence will be demonstrated and practiced.

Why is this lab needed? : The ultrasound-guided denervation to treat painful osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, and shoulder joints is recently introduced, and the technique continues to evolve based on the development of anatomical and clinical knowledge at a rapid pace. Therefore, it is crucial for practitioners to under the shortcomings of the currently practiced approach and adapts newly developed techniques based on sound evidence to provide more effective and safer treatment.

Lab Outline/Format:: The first half of the session will be a presentation reviewing neuroanatomy of articular branches of the hip, knee, and shoulder joints, previously accepted techniques and their limitations, and introduction of the most current revisions. Following the lecture, the participants will rotate through three stations where the skills are demonstrated by experienced faculty and practiced under the supervision.
