Understanding and demonstrating your worth: What is the value of Physiatry in health care?

Session Description: This session will explore physiatry’s place in the value-based health care system of the future. There will be a brief presentation to level-set the current state of value-based health care, including its promises and pitfalls. Then we will hear case-studies from the careers of our distinguished panel members and how they are proving their value as physiatrists in their health care systems, paving the way for health care innovation from physiatrists everywhere. Heidi Prather, DO former professor and vice chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery and founder and division chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation in the departments of orthopaedic surgery and neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, will share her work as a physiatrist with the Center for the Advancement of Value in Musculoskeletal Care at HSS in New York, and about building life-style medicine programs at two storied academic orthopedic institutions. As Vice Chair for Outpatient Services and Director of the Value-based Fellowship in Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine, Chris Standaert, MD will explain how he is demonstrating the value of physiatric spine care and how it translates to better outcomes and cost-savings in the unique model of UPMC in Pennsylvania. Heakyung Kim, MD will discuss how she created and expanded the Columbia/Cornell pediatric rehabilitation department from the ground up and how she is managing the unique challenges of her new roles as Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Chair in Mobility Research at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Finally, Joel Press, MD, Physiatrist-in-Chief, and Joel and Anne Ehrenkranz Chair in Physiatry at HSS in New York, will share his decades of experience and knowledge about building and growing physiatric spine and musculoskeletal medicine departments and research programs at esteemed institutions such as Northwestern University/Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and HSS.

Why is this session needed? : Value in health care is still a nebulus concept and the delivery of high-value care can feel elusive. Physiatry’s place in a value-based health care system and how to communicate physiatry’s value isn’t immediately clear to members. This session will provide background and definitions of value-based health care, and then proceed to panel discussion. The discussion will include real-world examples from pioneers and thought-leaders in our the field who have already demonstrated the value of physiatry to their health care systems and have had to be innovative and BOLD in their approaches. The session will also have time for Q&A from the audience and will include several virtual polls to encourage audience participation.
