Hip Joint and Tendon Injury Update: From Front to Back

Session Description: There is an essential need to more fully understand how to best optimize treatments and rehabilitation protocols while patients recover from hip joint and surrounding tendon injuries. An evidence-based review of the major lateral, posterior, medial, and anterior injuries associated with the hip will be provided. Rehabilitation timing, the use of adjunct pain-relieving measures (including ice, heat, and oral anti-inflammatories), immobilization, weight-bearing status, use of regenerative biologics and injections, bracing, and surgical options all potentially play roles in addressing connective tissue and joint injury around and inside the hip.

The aim of this session will be to improve the learner's knowledge base regarding the array of intra-articular and surrounding tendinous injuries that can impact the hip joint, and help the learner identify what professional resources are available and/or needed to implement more effective rehabilitation and treatment strategies in these regards.

Why is this session needed? : Physiatrists need detailed descriptions and updated evidence-based knowledge regarding effectiveness of rehabilitation protocols toward recovery of patients with hip injuries affecting strength, pain, and stability. This session closes a critical knowledge and practice gap for physiatrists whose role must be to best understand the current state of evidence in the treatment of hip injury, and what rehabilitation plans work best in these regards.

Was this session previously presented at the Annual Assembly?: No, but last year we presented an analogous session on "ankle tendon injury update: from front to back" which was very well attended and received. We hope for a similar strong turnout for this session on the hip, and we plan to add some discussion of intra-articular hip pathology as well as the surrounding tendinous structures.
