Session Description: While Cancer Rehabilitation is an exciting upcoming sub-speciality of rehabilitation medicine; cancer pain on the other hand is a dying art on life support. There are very few opportunities for formal training in cancer pain management. Most of the fellows graduating from ACGME pain fellowship programs are gravitating towards neuromodulation, interventional spine and minimally invasive procedures while leaving a dearth of specialists trained and capable of offering cancer pain management. The current session will explore collaborative opportunities of cross pollination between Cancer Rehabilitation and Cancer Pain under the umbrella of Rehabilitation Medicine. This true interdisciplinary co-habitated model of healthcare delivery might be the solution to establish a self-sustainable financial and economically viable sub-speciality of “Cancer Pain & Rehabilitation” under Physiatry.

Why is this session needed? : Session: Panel Discussion
Goal: Explore possibility of self sustainable interdisciplinary model of health care delivery under the sub-specilaity of "cancer Pain & rehabilitation" under Department of Physiatry .
Dr. Kalia: Shares his experience as a practicing Cancer Pain & Rehabilitation Specialist, his residency training as physiatrist and fellowship training in pain medicine was critical to appreciate and bring together the aspects of cancer pain and rehabilitation together, while his training as preventive medicine & public health health residency training provided systems based knowledge to develop a comprehensive program.
Dr. Saulino: Will describe the challenges and possible solutions as a chair of PMR to pave a path for other departments to follow
Dr. Singh: Describes the overlap on cancer rehabilitation with cancer pain and how to incorporate these principles in private practice
Dr. Desai: Will explore the path to financial stability and solvency for both the sub-specialties to merge together
Dr. Sheen: Will share her experience as a physiatrist who"s pursuing pain medicine fellow at MD Anderson. she will also describe the gaps in training and education at residency and fellowship level and how she decided on her fellowship training site to bring both cancer pain and rehabilitation specialties together.
