Lab Marketing

Description: : This workshop will allow the participant to be able to determine if there is any somatic dysfunction present that may respond to manual treatment. Based on the findings from the structural examination, the participant will then learn how to deliver muscle energy treatments as indicated for a pelvic upslip dysfunction, a sacroiliac joint asymmetric hypomobility dysfunction, or a rotational lumbar dysfunction. The participants will be primarily at treatment tables working with other participants to learn the hands-on skills necessary to be able to provide these treatments safely to patients.
Why is this lab needed? Physiatrists are hands-on practitioners who rely extensively on physical exam skills to make diagnosis and treatment recommendations, However, most physiatrists do not get training in the use of their physical examination skills to diagnosis structural changes in the spine that would respond to manual treatment.
Lab Outline/Format:: The workshop will be a series of short didactic presentations followed by practice of the techniques presented at the treatment table with the use of the presenters and table trainers to assist the participants. There will be 4 segments to the workshop of 35-40 minutes each, including:
1. Structural examination skills for the evaluation of bony landmarks, alignment and movement patterns for the pelvis, sacroiliac joint and lower lumbar spine.
2. Muscle Energy treatment techniques for diagnosis of pelvic/innominate upslip dysfunction.
3. Muscle Energy treatment techniques for diagnosis of Unilateral SI joint hypomobility dysfunction.
4. Muscle Energy treatment techniques for diagnosis of lumbar segmental rotational dysfunction.

Learning Objectives:

  • identify landmarks and perform components of an osteopathic structural evaluation for determining somatic dysfunction of the sacroiliac joint, pelvis, and lumbar spine
  • discuss the indications for, and perform the muscle energy manual treatment techniques for somatic dysfunction of the pelvis with innominate up slip.
  • discuss the indications for, and perform the muscle energy manual treatment techniques for somatic dysfunction of an asymmetric hypomobile sacroiliac joint
  • discuss the indications for and perform the muscle energy manual treatment techniques for somatic dysfunction of a rotational asymmetry in the lower lumbar spine
