In addition to common sports related injuries, rehabilitation medicine physicians can encounter sideline emergencies during sporting events. Sideline physicians are often first responders in these cases and serve as team leaders, directing emergency care. These life-threatening events require quick responses and effective treatment strategies.

This hands-on workshop combines the knowledge and skills from Physiatry and Emergency Medicine. We will demonstrate multiple emergency scenarios to help sideline physicians recognize and prepare for on-field emergencies with hands-on skills training. The clinical scenarios presented teach physicians how to recognize, strategize and direct care during on-field emergencies. Hands-on training stations include blunt abdominal trauma and FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma), pneumothorax, neurogenic shock and spinal cord injury, cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, polytrauma, hyperthermia, seizure. The workshop also prepares physicians to triage care during natural disaster and mass casualty events such as lightning strikes. Stations include hands-on guidance through procedures and interventions

There is a 5 minute introduction and the hands-on sessions will be divided into 6 workstations. Participants will rotate through workstations.
1.Neurogenic Shock/Spinal Cord Injury and Spinal Board/Cardiac Arrest – 30 minutes
2.FAST/Pnemothorax - 30 min
3. Lightning/Burns/Mass Casualty – 30 min
4.Polytrauma/Pelvic Fracture/Hip Binding– 30 min
5.Anaphylaxis– 20 min
6.Hyperthermia/Seizure – 20 min

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize life-threatening emergencies that can occur on-field through history and physical examination
  • Acquire proficiency in FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma) to identify serious injuries in blunt abdominal trauma
  • Develop an effective strategy to coordinate safe patient transport in an emergency
  • Improve clinical outcomes and survival during an on-field emergency with use of emergency medical procedures on the field
