Lab Marketing

Description: : Participants will enhance their skills in the execution of a lumbar puncture. The procedure will will be taught with 3 localization techniques (1) visual / palpation (2) ultrasound and (3) fluoroscopy. The visual / palpation station will include teaching with lumbar puncture stimulator. The ultrasound
station will include simulation with an ultrasound gel model. The fluoroscopic station will include a virtual reality model (spine mentor). All three station will be supplemented by didactic materials. Participants will rotate between each station.

Participants do not need to have prior experience with spinal injections to participate. All materials will be provided. Additionally, didactic videos will be shown on a continual loop.

Why is this lab needed? : Execution of lumbar punctures is an increasing common practice in both neurologic and pain management physiatry practices. Potential use for this technique include administration of therapeutic intrathecal agents (baclofen, morphine, nusinersen, etc.); evaluation of hydrocephalus; and meningitis workup. It is appropriate for physiatrists to have competency in this procedural skill. Many physiatrists may have had limited exposure to this technique during their training. This workshop will improve the attendees confidence in performing this procedure.

Lab Outline/Format:: Participants will rotate through each station - should take 10-15 minutes per station

Station 1:
traditional lumbar puncture techniques
Station 2:
Ultrasound guided lumbar puncture techniques
Station 3:
Fluoroscopically guided lumbar puncture techniques

Learning Objectives:

  • improve their LP performance using visual and palpation localization techniques through the use of LP simulation model.
  • learn the sonographic appearance of spinal structures relative to ultrasound-guided lumbar punctures through the use of a gel ultrasound phantom.
  • learn the radiographic appearance of spinal structures relative to fluoroscopically-guided lumbar puncture and execute this procedure through the use of virtual reality injection model.
