Background and/or Objectives: Past research suggests burn patients transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) after hospitalization have better functional outcomes than those who received rehabilitation in burn centers. However, there is a lack of research examining how the hospitalization factors like LOS and total burn surface area percentage (%TBSA) affect IRF outcomes. Our study aims to investigate the impact of these variables on IRF course, including LOS, discharge setting, and functional improvement

Design: Retrospective chart review

Setting: IRF and acute care burn center

Participants: Patients (N=49) admitted for inpatient rehabilitation after a burn injury.

Interventions: IRF

Main Outcome Measures: %TBSA, Hospital LOS, IRF LOS, Functional outcome measurement (FOM) which include measurement at IRF admission (FOMA), measurements at IRF discharge (FOMD) and change in outcome measurement from admission to discharge (FOM∆)

Results: Hospital LOS is negatively correlate with FOMA (p=.003, r= - .41), with FOMD (p=.024, r= -.32), but not with FOM∆. Notably, our study also revealed a significant positive correlation between hospital LOS and IR LOS (p=.035, r=.30). Although %TBSA and hospital LOS are highly correlated with each other, we observed no correlation between %TBSA with FOMA, FOMD, or FOM∆

Conclusions: Our findings indicate that hospital LOS may serve as a potential predictor of functional outcome measurement for burn patients at the end of both hospitalization and discharge. Furthermore, the positive correlation observed between hospital LOS and IRF LOS, along with the significant difference between FOMA and FOMD, suggests that patients with longer hospital stays may require a longer duration of IRF to achieve substantial functional improvement. While our study found that there is no correlation between %TBSA to functional outcome measurements, further studies with larger sample size are needed to determine if certain confounding factors such as pre-existing comorbidities or socioeconomic status affect the findings.
