Quality of Life Changes in Stroke Rehabilitation: A Comprehensive Review

Objective: This study aimed to explore the effects of rehabilitation interventions on quality-of-life outcomes among stroke patients and analyze their impact.

Design: A comprehensive review of relevant studies was conducted. The studies employed various methodologies (longitudinal, survey, randomized controlled trials) to evaluate quality of life changes in stroke rehabilitation.

Setting: The studies included in this review were carried out in diverse settings, including home-based rehabilitation programs, inpatient stroke rehabilitation units, and early neurological rehabilitation centers.

Participants: The participants consisted of stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation, with varying sample sizes across the studies.

Interventions: The interventions evaluated in the studies encompassed home-based rehabilitation programs, early neurological rehabilitation, and comprehensive discharge planning. These interventions aimed to facilitate functional recovery and enhance the overall well-being of stroke survivors.

Main Outcome Measures: The reviewed studies assessed various outcome measures, including quality of life, functional outcomes, disability, and postural balance. Multiple assessment tools were utilized, such as the modified Rankin Scale, modified Barthel Index, Motor Assessment Scale, CT-50 Cognitive Test, EuroQol-5D, and SF-36 survey.

Results: Home-based rehabilitation programs exhibited positive effects on postural balance, walking ability, and overall quality of life in stroke survivors. Functional recovery was observed up to 12 months after discharge; however, there may exist a disparity between functional recovery and overall well-being. Inpatient stroke rehabilitation initially improved quality of life, but a decline was noted post-discharge. The combination of home-based rehabilitation with standard care led to reduced disability and improved quality of life. The issue of addressing sexuality in stroke care necessitates increased attention for improved holistic outcomes.

Conclusions: Based on the synthesis of available evidence, this study underscores the importance of rehabilitation interventions in enhancing quality of life among stroke patients. Home-based programs, early rehabilitation, and comprehensive discharge planning play pivotal roles in promoting overall well-being. Addressing psychosocial factors, including sexuality issues, is critical in stroke rehabilitation.
